Shaping life vision for city-scale island in Abu Dhabi
Hudayriat Island was envisaged as a diverse community that celebrates its unique natural and cultural environment. CONDE Urban Design was appointed to manage a scheme for an international competition, in collaboration with Perkins+Will London, Dar Al-Handasah and Elementa.
The design principle adopted positioned Hudayriat Island to become an exemplar sustainable waterfront community for future generations of Emiratis, supported by a robust business model. Instead of looking for the “right” solution for this challenging masterplan, the design team decided to explore different approaches to key issues.
Optioneering method
From early stages, the design team understood that looking for different schemes has the potential to reveal a range of solutions that can yield different urban expressions, best practices, and reveal the key factors to the success of the final scheme.
Catalyst Scheme
The Catalyst Scheme will be strong urban statement that reinforces Abu Dhabi’s status of Capital of the Nation and inspire its citizens from all Emirates. The scheme has the potential to position the city, its society, to inspire grow Cosmopolitan, in a vibrant urban environment strongly connected to its surroundings.
Ecology Scheme
The Ecology Scheme presents Abu Dhabi as a City that preserves and enhances its natural environment and inspire Abu Dhabi to grow in harmony with nature and traditional coastal activities, and celebrates Abu Dhabi Sustain-ability vocation.
Wellness Scheme
The Wellness Scheme projects Abu Dhabi as capital of a health-living nation, inspiring the Emirate to grow with sustainability. Its meandering pattern creates a unique, natural pattern, different than the one of a city.
Intelligent infrastructure and sustainable urbanism measures
All concept options explore open space, street layout and building orientation that utilizes the natural climatic benefits of the site. The development framework, layout and building massing is designed to optimize the thermal comfort micro-climate of neighbourhoods and communities. Innovative climatically responsive design will optimize the use of wind, daylight, and temperature swings, reducing reliance on mechanical and electrical systems, creating a more efficient and comfortable environment whilst reducing pollution.
